Question: Some people think that cultural traditions will be destroyed if they are used as money-making attractions aimed at tourists. Others, however, believe that this is a way to save these traditions. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Ideas for the 1st view:
Too many tourists traveling to attractions will make it hard to protect cultural traditions, because of cultural conflicts.
A increasing number of shops and hotels near cultural attractions would bring a strong commercial atmosphere, which is harmful for local traditions to maintain its original appearance.
Too many restaurants and traffics might lead to air and water pollutions which would damage the natural environment, and this is harmful for preserving the cultural traditions.
Ideas for the 2nd view:
Popular tourist attractions would attract more people to learn and understand the local cultures which would help to preserve these traditions.
The prosperity of tourist industry could result in more job opportunities and an increase in local people’s revenues, which would make them value more about their cultural traditions.
However, in my view, the prosperity of tourist attractions would help to preserve cultural traditions, because local people would value more about their culture if tourism brings them higher revenues. Compared with traditions being kept isolated from the outside world, tourist industries based on local traditions would give the natives more job opportunities, such as those in hotels or restaurants, and thereby an increase in their revenues. This, in my opinion, would make the local value more about their own cultures. Therefore, I can imagine that more effort would be put in the preservation of the original customs, because the traditions, in this case, are not only about their cultural identities, but also a way of seeking better a living condition for the natives.
